Fundado em 20 de fevereiro de 1969, o Instituto Helena Lubienska surgiu em um contexto político social marcado pela ditadura militar no Brasil.Seu nome, uma homenagem à grande educadora Helena Lubienska de Lenval (nascida na Polônia, viveu a maior parte de sua vida na França e faleceu em 1972), seguidora de Maria Montessori, que em sua metodologia, defendia a preparação de um ambiente em que o ser humano – principalmente a criança – pudesse aprender com liberdade.
Isso não significava negligência ou indiferença, e sim respeito ao desenvolvimento do ser.
O aluno passava a ter seu mais profundo interesse despertado e seus momentos de atenção mais bem aproveitados pelo professor, com afeto e cuidado.Fundou-se o Lubienska com essa filosofia.
É uma instituição que se define por adotar uma abordagem globalizante do homem ajudando-o no desenvolvimento de suas capacidades cognitivas, motoras, afetivas, de relação interpessoal, de inserção e atuação social.Todos poderiam expressar suas opiniões e os professores deveriam conhecer seus alunos.
Não foi à toa que o Lubienska logo se destacou no cenário educacional da cidade.
Revendo as formas tradicionais de ensino que praticavam a submissão e a passividade dos alunos no processo de aprendizagem, tornou-se um espaço democrático onde todos participam com suas ideias, críticas e sugestões.
Entende que a aprendizagem escolar se constrói através das interações que ocorrem entre os professores e alunos e entre estes e seus pares, procurando promovê-las, em seu cotidiano, de forma que ocorra de maneira significativa para todos os alunos e alunas.Percebe o ensino como uma ajuda necessária à construção dos conhecimentos produzidos pela humanidade, ao longo de sua história.
Volta sua atenção às diferenças individuais, acreditando que as aprendizagens dependem das características singulares de cada aprendiz.O Lubienska em sua “praxis” trabalha no sentido de adequar suas propostas às possibilidades reais de cada aluno e aluna, lançando desafios que os ajudem a avançar em seus conhecimentos, dirigindo seu trabalho no sentido da construção do saber; saber fazer e ser.
Neste sentido, é importante que os alunos e alunas ao aprenderem, considerem como aprendizagem, não só o conteúdo, mas também a organização e atuação na busca do saber.O O Instituto Helena Lubienska começou apenas com a educação infantil e já incluía crianças especiais em suas salas de aula.
Ao longo dos anos, novas turmas foram sendo formadas em um processo gradativo.
